Lost Your IRS Identity Protection PIN? Here’s How to Find It

If the IRS has assigned you an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) to protect you from identity theft, it’s crucial to use it when filing your taxes. Forgetting or losing your IP PIN can cause delays, but there are ways to retrieve it and ensure your tax return is processed smoothly.

Retrieving Your IP PIN Online

Important Note: Online retrieval isn’t available for minor dependent IP PINs. For assistance with a minor dependent’s IP PIN, you must call 800-908-4490.

The most convenient way to get your IP PIN is often online. The IRS provides a secure online portal where you can access your IP PIN if you can verify your identity. This is generally the quickest method to regain access to your PIN and file your return without complications.

How to Reissue Your IP PIN

If online retrieval isn’t possible, the IRS can reissue your IP PIN.

Important Note: If you can successfully verify your identity with an IRS phone assistor, your IP PIN will be mailed to your address on file within approximately 21 days.

However, there are situations where the IP PIN cannot be reissued by mail. This includes cases where you enrolled in the IP PIN program online after 2019, or if it is after October 14th and you have not yet filed your current or prior year tax returns (Forms 1040 or 1040 PR/SS).

If your IP PIN cannot be reissued and you are unable to create or access an online IRS account, you still have the option to file a paper tax return. In this case, you should mail your return without including your IP PIN. The IRS will then review your return to confirm it was filed by you, but be aware that this process can cause delays in your refund.

Important Reminder About Form 15227

It’s important to understand that Form 15227 is only for individuals who are newly requesting to opt into the IP PIN program. If you have already been assigned an IP PIN and are simply trying to retrieve it, do not file Form 15227. Using this form when you already have a PIN will not help you retrieve it and may cause confusion or delays.

Losing your IP PIN doesn’t have to derail your tax filing. By understanding the retrieval and reissuance options, you can take the necessary steps to file your return accurately and securely.
