That’s a super question, and one that lots of kids wonder about! Understanding where babies come from is really important because it’s how people, and lots of animals, keep going and growing as a species.
Understanding the Body Basics
The very first step in making a baby is when a tiny sperm from someone with a penis joins with an egg from someone with a uterus.
To really get how this works, it’s helpful to know the names for some body parts. You can check out these pictures to see what we’re talking about: female reproductive system and male reproductive system.
When we talk about someone with a penis, we mean someone who has a penis and testes (sometimes called testicles). These are usually called men or boys.
And when we talk about someone with a uterus, we mean someone who has a uterus (where a baby grows!), a vagina (the opening that leads to the uterus), and ovaries. These are usually called women or girls.
It’s also important to know that some people are born with bodies that are a bit different, or they might feel like the gender they were assigned at birth doesn’t quite fit who they are. People can be men, women, both, neither, or somewhere in between, and their bodies are all wonderful and normal in their own way.
The Journey of Sperm and Egg
Have you heard of puberty? It’s a time when your body starts to change from a kid’s body to an adult’s body. This usually happens when you’re in late elementary school or middle school.
Sperm are super tiny – you’d need a microscope to see them! They look a bit like tadpoles. They’re made in the testes of someone with a penis and come out in a liquid called semen. Once someone with testes goes through puberty, their body can make millions of sperm every single day!

Eggs, on the other hand, are stored in the ovaries of someone with a uterus. After puberty, usually one egg is released each month. Even though eggs are tiny, they are actually big enough to see without a microscope – about the size of a grain of sand!
How Sperm Meets Egg: Conception
So, how do sperm and egg actually get together to make a baby? This is called conception, or sometimes fertilization.
The most common way conception happens is when a person with a penis and a person with a vagina have sex. This is when the penis goes into the vagina and semen, which contains sperm, comes out.
The sperm then swim up through the vagina towards the uterus. If a sperm meets an egg in the right place, they can join together. When this happens, it’s the very beginning of a baby! At this early stage, it’s actually called an embryo.

This embryo then travels to the uterus and attaches to the wall of the uterus. This is where it will grow and develop for about nine months until it’s ready to be born and become a baby.
Other Ways Babies Can Be Made
It’s also important to know that families are all different, and there are other ways babies can be conceived too.
For example, some families have two moms. In these families, they might need help from a sperm donor. A sperm donor is someone who provides sperm. A doctor can then place the sperm into the uterus of one of the moms.
There’s also a process called IVF, which stands for in-vitro fertilization. In IVF, doctors take sperm from someone with testes and eggs from someone with ovaries and combine them in a special dish in a lab to create an embryo. Then, the doctor carefully places the embryo into the uterus of the person who will carry the baby. The baby then grows just like any other baby.
From Embryo to Baby: Growing and Birth
Once the sperm and egg join and form an embryo, the embryo attaches to the lining of the uterus.
A special organ called the placenta develops. The placenta is like a super important helper that gives the growing baby all the food and everything else it needs to grow big and strong inside the uterus.
When the baby is fully grown and ready to be born, the muscles of the uterus start to squeeze and push the baby out through the vagina. This is called vaginal birth or labor.
Sometimes, it’s safer for the baby to be born in a different way. In these cases, doctors can perform a surgery called a Cesarean section, or C-section. In a C-section, the doctor makes a cut in the belly and uterus and gently takes the baby out. Moms get special medicine during a C-section so they don’t feel pain.
Still Curious? Keep Asking Questions!
It’s totally normal to have lots more questions about where babies come from! Some kids want to know every tiny detail, and others just want to know a little bit.
If you have more questions, the best thing to do is talk to a grown-up you trust, like your parents, a teacher, or another family member. There are also great resources out there that can help grown-ups answer your questions in a way that’s right for you. Asking questions is a great way to learn and understand the world around you!
