Where to Stay in Phuket: Your Ultimate Guide to the Best Areas

So, you’re planning a trip to Phuket? Fantastic choice!

Having explored Phuket extensively, most recently in early 2023, I can vouch for its enduring appeal. It’s a truly spectacular island, offering a lifetime’s worth of exploration without ever getting dull. The sheer variety Phuket boasts can be overwhelming when deciding where to base your holiday. If you’ve got a week, or even two, knowing where to stay and what to do is key to an unforgettable trip.

The beauty of Phuket is its versatility. Whether you’re dreaming of budget backpacking adventures, over-the-top luxury escapes, rejuvenating spa retreats, adrenaline-pumping adventure sports, immersive cultural experiences, world-class surfing, historical explorations, vibrant nightlife, exquisite cuisine, non-stop parties, intense Muay Thai training, peaceful yoga sessions, or simply a classic beach vacation, Phuket delivers it all on this captivating island nestled in southern Thailand.

This comprehensive guide is designed to simplify your decision-making process. Below, I’ve broken down the main areas of Phuket, providing insights into what each locale offers. Understanding the distinct character of each area is crucial to ensuring your chosen spot aligns perfectly with your holiday desires.

Seeking a tranquil, secluded beach and ultimate privacy? Patong’s bustling energy might not be the best fit. Consider areas like Mai Khao, Surin, or Karon instead. Yearning for a taste of local Phuket life away from the tourist throngs? Rawai or Phuket Old Town could be your ideal destinations.

As you’ll discover, your Phuket holiday experience will be significantly shaped by your choice of location.

By the end of this guide, you’ll be equipped with a clear understanding of Phuket’s diverse offerings and be well on your way to selecting the perfect area for your dream Phuket adventure. And remember, if any questions arise, feel free to drop them in the comments section below – I’m here to help!

Getting to Your Phuket Accommodation

Your first step upon arrival is navigating from Phuket International Airport to your chosen accommodation.

The most convenient and budget-friendly option is often the airport shuttle service. These shuttles service most major hotels across the island, particularly in popular areas like Patong and Kata. While their reach to more southern destinations might be limited, they reliably cover key tourist hubs. Expect to pay between 100-200 baht for a door-to-door service. Shuttle service desks are easily located within the airport arrivals area.

Metered taxis are also readily available, and the taxi service in Phuket has significantly improved. Past issues with inflated fares have been addressed, making taxis a more viable option. However, unless you’re venturing to a truly remote location, the airport shuttle usually suffices.

Finally, contacting your hotel directly for transfer advice is always recommended. Many hotels will recommend the airport shuttle, while others, especially luxury establishments, may offer private or complimentary shuttle services.

Now, let’s delve into the unique areas Phuket has in store for you.

Patong: The Energetic Tourist Hub

Image of Patong Beach, Phuket
Patong Beach in Phuket, a vibrant and bustling area known for its lively atmosphere, nightlife, and tourist attractions.

Patong was my first introduction to Phuket, and it remains the island’s most popular tourist destination. If you’re looking for the quintessential Phuket tourist experience, Patong is it. Here, you’ll find a vibrant mix of massage parlors, souvenir shops, tuk-tuks zipping through the streets, street vendors offering their wares, a plethora of international restaurants catering to every taste, and of course, a significant number of fellow tourists. Patong Beach itself is attractive, but be prepared for crowds, especially during peak hours.

Patong’s reputation is also built on its legendary nightlife. As dusk settles, the area, particularly Bangla Road, transforms into a high-energy entertainment zone. Expect dazzling lights, pulsating music spilling from countless bars and nightclubs, enticing street food stalls, and captivating street performers. Bangla Road is also the epicenter of Phuket’s adult entertainment scene, with go-go bars and related establishments. While it’s a lively and bustling environment, attracting a large tourist crowd, it’s wise to be aware of the atmosphere, especially if you’re traveling with family. However, if you’re seeking a party-centric Phuket experience, Patong is undoubtedly the best place to stay, offering ample opportunities to socialize and celebrate.

Accommodation in Patong is incredibly diverse, reflecting its popularity. From budget-friendly hostels to luxurious resorts, Patong caters to every traveler’s wallet.

Points of Interest in and around Patong:

  • Bangla Road: The undisputed center of Phuket’s vibrant tourist nightlife.

Kata: Beautiful Beaches and a Relaxed Vibe

Image of Kata Beach Sunset, Phuket
A picturesque sunset at Kata Beach in Phuket, showcasing its white sand, clear waters, and tranquil atmosphere, ideal for families and relaxation.

In my opinion, Kata Beach is arguably the most beautiful beach in Phuket.

Located a short drive south of Patong, Kata offers a long, inviting stretch of white sand. While it can get busy at times, it’s generally less crowded than Patong Beach. The water often has a gentle swell, making it enjoyable for swimming, although during rougher seas, caution is advised for young children. Overall, Kata is a fantastic beach destination, especially for families.

The main Kata area provides a good selection of restaurants, bars, and shops, ensuring you’re well-catered for. Its atmosphere is noticeably more relaxed than Patong’s, making it an excellent choice for those who want to be near the action but prefer a quieter base. For first-time Phuket visitors, Kata is a particularly appealing location. It strikes a perfect balance: close to the energy of Patong, yet retaining a more laid-back and family-friendly ambiance.

Points of Interest in Kata:

Located adjacent to Kata, and just a short drive from Patong, Karon offers a similar level of convenience while maintaining a more relaxed atmosphere. While perhaps not as widely known as Patong or Kata, Karon boasts a solid selection of dining and accommodation options, almost seamlessly blending into Kata. You’ll find some nightlife, charming cafes, and most of the amenities Patong provides, but on a smaller, more manageable scale.

Karon Beach is a major draw – a long expanse of white sand that is significantly less crowded than Patong. The atmosphere in Karon is generally quieter and more laid-back, attracting couples and families. Consequently, Karon offers a wide range of excellent resorts. If it’s your first time in Phuket and you prefer a more peaceful environment, Karon is a great choice. Kalim: Phuket’s Surfing Beach

Kalim’s appeal is primarily for one group: surfers.

During the low season (April to November), Kalim stands out as perhaps the best surf beach in Phuket. Consistent 2-3 meter swells are common, and the area even hosts international surfing competitions.

Beyond surfing, Kalim offers a quieter atmosphere. Outside of surf season, the beach isn’t ideal for swimming. However, you’ll find some excellent restaurants and hotels, making it a pleasant destination for those seeking peace and quiet, while still being conveniently close to Patong.

Bang Tao: Luxury Resorts and Serene Beaches

Bang Tao is synonymous with Laguna Phuket, the island’s largest resort complex. Interestingly, Laguna Phuket is built on a reclaimed tin mining site, transformed into a luxurious tourist haven. Guests staying within the Laguna complex enjoy access to shared amenities across the resorts, including restaurants, pools, and spas.

Bang Tao Beach is impressive, generally uncrowded, especially towards the north. It’s perfect for sunbathing and relaxed beach activities.

It’s worth noting that beyond the Laguna complex and the beach, entertainment options are limited in Bang Tao. This can be a plus or minus, depending on your desired holiday style!

Points of Interest in Bang Tao:

  • Layan Beach: A small, undeveloped beach north of Bang Tao, ideal for sea kayaking in the lagoons.
  • Anthem Wake Park: A large wakeboarding park catering to all skill levels.
  • Phuket Adventure Mini Golf: A fun evening activity, located near Bangtao Village Resort.

Surin has evolved since my last visit.

It was once known for its vibrant beach club scene, a place to sip cocktails, socialize, and enjoy music right on the sand, attracting celebrities and millionaires to its high-end resorts and villas.

While the lively beach club scene has become more subdued, Surin remains one of Phuket’s most beautiful beaches, with powdery white sand and clear turquoise waters reminiscent of postcards. You can still find beach chairs to relax and soak up the sun. Surin retains its upscale ambiance, attracting travelers with a taste for finer things.

Rawai: Local Flavor and Island Hopping Gateway

Rawai is located on the opposite side of the island, at Phuket’s southern tip. It’s less tourist-heavy than the west coast areas, although it’s becoming increasingly popular.

Rawai retains a more local character, distinct from the tourist-centric areas around Patong. It’s quieter, attracting a more mature crowd, including long-term residents and a significant Russian community. The food scene is more authentically Thai, and Rawai is known for its famous seafood market. It’s also a popular departure point for island-hopping tours.

Rawai lacks a vibrant nightlife scene or many tourist-focused attractions. Hotel options are more limited than on the west coast, but you’ll find abundant excellent local restaurants. For a more authentic and less touristy Phuket experience, Rawai is a great choice.
