Initially adorned with over 4,000 light bulbs, the sign was intended to be temporary, lasting only a year or two. However, as Hollywood’s fame grew, so did the sign’s iconic status. Consequently, it was never taken down.
Over the years, the sign endured significant wear and tear. In 1949, the City of Los Angeles Parks Department assumed responsibility for its upkeep. The “LAND” portion was removed, and the light bulbs were taken out.
In a grand restoration effort in 1978, the entire sign was replaced with steel letters. Nine donors contributed over $27,000 each to fund the $250,000 project. The newly revamped sign was unveiled on November 14, 1978, coinciding with Hollywood’s 75th anniversary.
The sign received another update in 2013 on its 90th birthday. Today, it attracts millions of visitors annually and remains an enduring symbol of the American film industry.
