Where Do You Inject Ozempic: A Step-by-Step Guide

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Your Ozempic® (semaglutide) injection 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg routine. See the Instructions for Use included with the Patient Information and Instructions for Use link provided. Pen sizes may vary in volume, but steps for using a new Ozempic® pen are the same. Watch this video to learn how to take Ozempic®.

JULIE:

Hi Laura.

LAURA:

Hi Julie. Come on in. You’re early today.

JULIE:

I know, I know. I wanted to get out. It’s such nice weather out. I bet the farmer’s market will be packed this week.

LAURA:

Yeah, I’m almost ready. I just need to do my Ozempic® injection.

JULIE:

My husband is starting Ozempic® next week. Will you show me how you do your Ozempic® injection? I want to help Sam as much as I can.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Take Ozempic® exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to. See the Patient Information and Instructions for Use for complete instructions.

LAURA:

Sure. I find the Instructions for Use easy to follow. It’s just prepare, check, select, and inject.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

PREPARE, CHECK, SELECT, INJECT.

JULIE:

Got it.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Pen on screen is a 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg Ozempic® pen. Your healthcare provider may prescribe an Ozempic® pen that is 1 mg or 2 mg if needed.

LAURA:

So, first I put a new needle on the pen. I check to make sure the label on my pen matches what I was prescribed, and that the liquid in the pen is clear. It should be colorless, like this.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

PREPARE: Check Pen

JULIE:

Let’s see. Looks colorless.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

PREPARE: Attach Needle

LAURA:

Then I attach the needle.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Always use a new needle for each injection. This will reduce the risk of contamination, infection, leakage of Ozempic®, and blocked needles.

LAURA:

Just peel off the paper tab. Push and twist to make sure it’s on tight. Take off the outer cap, and then the inner needle shield. Oh, and I almost forgot. Make sure Sam always uses a new needle for each injection. And he shouldn’t share his needles or Ozempic® pen with anyone, or reuse needles, because of the risk for serious infection.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Do not share your Ozempic® pen with other people, even if the needle is changed. You may give other people a serious infection, or get a serious infection from them.

LAURA:

Since this is a new pen, I need to do a flow check.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

If a drop does not appear, repeat the flow check up to 6 times. If there is still no drop, change the needle and repeat again. Do not use the pen if a drop of Ozempic® still does not appear. Contact Novo Nordisk at 1-888-693-6742.

LAURA:

First, I turn the dose selector until the flow check symbol lines up with the dose pointer. Then, I press and hold down the dose button until the dose counter shows 0, and the 0 must line up with the dose pointer.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

CHECK: Check Flow. You only need to do a flow check before your first injection with each new pen.

LAURA:

A drop of Ozempic® should appear at the needle tip. Okay, flow check is good. Now to select my dose. Again, just turn the dose selector until my prescribed dose is lined up with the dose counter.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

SELECT: Select Dose.

Pen on screen is a 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg Ozempic® pen.

Your healthcare provider may prescribe a pen that is 1 mg or 2 mg Ozempic® if needed. Your healthcare provider will prescribe the dose of Ozempic® that is right for you.

If the dose counter stops before your prescribed dose, there is not enough Ozempic® left to give a full dose. Get a new Ozempic® pen.

LAURA:

So last time I injected in my thigh, but you should change your injection site each time.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Each injection should be given in a new (different) injection site. If you use the same body area for injection, change the injection site to a different spot within that area.

JULIE:

Yeah, Sam mentioned you can inject in your stomach area.

LAURA:

Yes, and your upper arm too. Once you’ve picked your spot, you’re ready to inject. I’m going to use my stomach area today.

JULIE:

Are you nervous about needles at all?

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Wipe your skin with an alcohol swab. Do not inject Ozempic® into a vein or muscle.

LAURA:

Maybe at first, but it’s just part of my routine now. Seriously, look how tiny the needle is.

JULIE:

Good for you. So, injection time?

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

INJECTION SITES subcutaneous.

LAURA:

Yep, just need to make sure I can see the dose counter, and then… needle in.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Look at the dose counter to make sure that you give your full dose. Push and hold down the dose button until the dose counter shows 0.

LAURA:

Press and hold the dose button until the dose counter shows 0. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

INJECT: Inject Your Dose of Ozempic®. Slowly count to 1-2-3-4-5-6.

After the dose counter shows 0, keep pressing the dose button and slowly count to 6 before you remove the needle from your skin.

LAURA:

Now just carefully take the needle out and dispose of it.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Put your used Ozempic® pens and needles in an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container or a hard plastic container with a lid.

See Instructions for Use for disposal information.

LAURA:

Get a sharps container, or use a heavy-duty plastic bottle to throw away the needles.

JULIE:

That doesn’t look scary at all.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:

Dispose of Needle

Do not recap the needle to avoid needle stick injury.

LAURA:

Like I said, it’s just part of my routine now. And if Sam has questions about using the pen, he can call a Medical Information Specialist who can walk him through it.

TEXT ON-SCREEN:
