What to Wear Fishing: A Woman Angler’s Guide to Functional & Fashionable Apparel

For years, I’ve been told that the fish don’t care about your outfit, and while that’s technically true, what to wear fishing definitely impacts your enjoyment of the experience. Comfort and protection from the elements are key to spending more time on the water and focusing on what really matters – the fishing! Over time, I’ve discovered three essential elements for my fishing wardrobe: sun protection, comfort, and dryness. And if I can find gear that combines functionality with a touch of style, even better! Who says fishing apparel can’t be both practical and fashionable?

That’s why I’m excited to share my experience with DSG Outerwear, a Wisconsin-based company dedicated to creating outdoor apparel for women, designed by women. This unique approach is what truly sets them apart, especially when it comes to fulfilling those crucial needs I mentioned. DSG understands the female angler, designing gear in a wide range of sizes with our specific needs in mind. As a pro-staff member for DSG for the third ice fishing season and second open water season, I can confidently say their commitment to women anglers is unmatched.

Let’s dive into my open water fishing closet and explore the colorful and functional pieces I rely on!

Breathable UPF 50+ Fishing Shirts: Sun Protection and Comfort

When it comes to fishing shirts, two DSG models stand out as my absolute favorites: the Nora Realtree Fishing® Pattern Hooded Shirt and the Kai Realtree Wav3® Fishing Shirt. The inclusive sizing (XXS to 4XL) is a game-changer. Finding functional and stylish fishing shirts in XXS has always been a struggle, making DSG a true standout for women of all body types.

Both the Nora and Kai shirts are available in stunning salmon, navy, and aqua colors – I’m tempted to collect them all! Beyond aesthetics, these shirts offer UPF 50+ sun protection, the highest possible rating, shielding your skin from harmful UV rays during long days on the water. The moisture-wicking fabric is another essential feature, keeping you dry and comfortable even on the hottest summer days.

The Nora shirt goes the extra mile with a hood for added sun and wind protection, a detachable neck gaiter, and a convenient kangaroo pocket. I’ve found the neck gaiter invaluable for shielding myself from both sun and wind while speeding across the lake. The Kai shirt incorporates mesh underarm panels for enhanced ventilation and finger loops to extend the fabric over your hands for extra sun protection while casting and reeling – brilliant for those sunny days! And let’s talk about the pattern on the Kai (pictured below) – it’s versatile and appealing to both freshwater and saltwater anglers alike.

True Fishing Shorts: Functionality Meets Practicality

Let me introduce you to my namesake – the Jenny Dock Shorts! Okay, maybe they weren’t actually named after me, but as someone who loves dock fishing and believes in accessible angling for everyone, these shorts feel like a perfect fit. The Jenny Dock shorts are truly designed for fishing, packed with angler-focused features:

  • Pocket Paradise: Seriously, pockets galore! We’re talking front pockets, back pockets, and a side cargo pocket – perfect for my phone, extra bobbers, or even a small tackle box for jigs.
  • Tool Time: Tool loops provide easy access to essential tools like pliers and line cutters.
  • Sun Shield: UPF 50+ sun protection to keep your legs protected.
  • Durable Fabric: Made with mechanical stretch ripstop fabric – tough enough to withstand stray hooks (trust me, I’ve tested it!).

Available in navy, rose, and taupe, and sizes XXS to 3XL, the Jenny Dock shorts are incredibly versatile. I own both navy and taupe – neutral colors that pair effortlessly with any shirt.

The Ultimate Rain Gear: Staying Dry in Any Weather

Finding rain gear that actually fits well has been a long-standing challenge. Before discovering the Harlow Technical Rain Suit, I resorted to men’s Frog Toggs, which were functional but left me feeling like I was wearing an oversized trash bag! DSG’s Harlow Technical Rain Jacket and Rain Pants have completely changed my rainy and windy fishing experiences. Here’s why this rain suit is a game-changer:

  • Waterproof and Breathable: Constructed with Sympatex® fabric, this suit is 100% waterproof and breathable. DSG rigorously tests samples in a German rain chamber for 48 hours before production, ensuring top-notch performance.
  • Jacket Features: The Harlow jacket includes cuff closures for extra wrist protection in heavy rain.
  • Pants Perfection: The Harlow pants feature adjustable tabs at the waistband for a comfortable fit and an adjustable inseam (34.5″ to 28.5″) for customized length.
  • Ample Storage: Large pockets provide plenty of space for extra gear and snacks.
  • Handy D-Rings: D-rings offer convenient attachment points for fishing pliers, grippers, towels, line cutters, sunglasses, and more.
  • Size and Color Options: Available in sapphire and charcoal, and sizes XXS to 5XL.

The Harlow suit has been incredible in rough water and driving rain, providing complete protection from the elements. It’s incredibly comfortable and allows for a full range of motion for any outdoor activity. The uninsulated and breathable design is perfect – it seals everything out while preventing overheating. My sapphire XXS Harlow suit is the perfect fit and look, and my old Frog Toggs are officially retired!

DSG Outerwear offers more than just clothing; they also have a fantastic line of fishing accessories, including my favorite trucker hats, neck gaiters with fun patterns, and other essential fishing gear. Ultimately, what to wear fishing is about combining comfort, protection, and personal style to enhance your time on the water. DSG Outerwear makes it easy for women anglers to find apparel that ticks all those boxes.
