In the late 19th century, they were likened to “Castle City” due to their resemblance to castle ruins. The name “Little Jerusalem,” or “New Jerusalem,” emerged from the perception that, from afar, the formations mirrored the ancient walled city of Jerusalem. By the time The Nature Conservancy became the stewards of this land, “Little Jerusalem” had become the commonly accepted name among locals and geologists alike.
Once part of the McGuire Ranch, owned by the same family for five generations, Little Jerusalem is now a park open for public exploration and enjoyment. Visitors are invited to hike the marked trails and witness the awe-inspiring rock formations, some of which rise over 100 feet above the Smoky Hill River valley.
