HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 stands as a premier, marine-grade enamel, renowned for its exceptional protective qualities and intensely rich colors. This high-performance paint delivers an unparalleled depth of color and sheen, transforming surfaces with its mirror-like brilliance. Whether you aim for subtle enhancements or dramatic focal points, HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98’s reflective properties can expertly manipulate space and light in any setting.
The secret to HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98’s superior performance lies in its densely pigmented formulation. This enamel boasts exceptional coverage and hiding power, minimizing the need for multiple coats. Furthermore, the high concentration of premium, colorfast pigments ensures long-lasting vibrancy and resistance to fading, preserving the beauty of your painted surfaces for years to come. Notably, HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 White is formulated to be virtually non-yellowing, maintaining its crisp, clean tone over time. It is important to note, however, that even the highest quality white oil finishes may exhibit slight yellowing in areas completely devoid of ultraviolet light, such as inside closets or rooms with minimal direct sunlight.
HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 is engineered with unique self-leveling and filling characteristics. These properties work in concert to create a flawlessly smooth, durable, and porcelain-like finish, regardless of whether you choose to apply it with a brush or spray. While optimal results are always achieved when using a Fine Paints of Europe Oil Primer/Undercoat, HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 offers remarkable versatility. It can be applied directly over clean, previously painted oil-based finishes that are in good condition, streamlining your painting process. For surfaces previously coated with waterborne paints, a simple preparation step of light sanding followed by priming with FPE Oil Primer/Undercoat is recommended to ensure optimal adhesion and a superior final finish.
Important Considerations for System Integrity
Fine Paints of Europe is committed to providing complete paint systems, ensuring compatibility and peak performance. Therefore, it is crucial to use HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 in conjunction with the Fine Paints of Europe primer specifically designed for this coating. Using primers from other manufacturers is not recommended and may compromise the integrity and longevity of your paint finish.
When used in conjunction with our “high build-high tooth” primers, Fine Paints of Europe paints offer significantly enhanced coverage rates compared to conventional domestic coatings. It is imperative to avoid applying Fine Paints of Europe products over sealers such as Shellac, Bin™, or Kilz™. While these sealers are suitable for their intended applications, they do not provide the necessary surface friction required for optimal adhesion of our high-performance coatings.
Surface Preparation: The Foundation for a Flawless Finish
Proper surface preparation is paramount to achieving a durable and aesthetically pleasing paint finish. Prior to painting, ensure surfaces are thoroughly dry and free from dust, chalk, grease, rust, and any other contaminants that could impede adhesion.
Dust and chalk should be meticulously removed by scrubbing the surface with a mild, powdered detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water to eliminate any detergent residue. Crucially, never use petroleum-based liquid soaps for surface preparation, as these can negatively impact paint adhesion.
Grease and wax deposits are effectively removed with lacquer thinner. For surfaces like kitchen cabinets or furniture that may have been treated with silicone-based waxes, stains, varnishes, or oils, pre-treat them with a deglossing agent such as Wil-Bond before applying FPE Oil Primer/Undercoat. This step ensures proper adhesion and prevents potential paint defects.
In cases of mildew contamination, thorough removal is essential. Wash affected areas with a mild bleach and TSP (trisodium phosphate) solution. It is absolutely critical to completely remove all bleach residue by rinsing thoroughly with water, preventing future paint problems. When painting metal surfaces, meticulously remove all traces of corrosion and rust before applying the appropriate FPE metal primer to ensure long-lasting protection and adhesion. For wooden surfaces, seal knots with shellac prior to priming to prevent sap bleed-through and ensure a uniform finish.
Glossy surfaces require dulling to promote proper paint adhesion. This can be achieved through light hand sanding or the application of a liquid sandpaper or dulling agent.
Tip: Creating a Dust-Free Painting Environment
A unique characteristic of high-quality brilliant enamels like HOLLANDLAC and ECO is their finely ground pigments, similar to those used in automotive paints. This fine pigment grind, while contributing to the exceptional finish, also makes these paints more susceptible to revealing airborne contamination, even in seemingly clean environments.
To minimize dust contamination when painting furniture or cabinet components, we recommend working in a garage or basement with a “wet floor” technique. Thoroughly wet the floor with a mop and bucket at least 24 hours before painting and maintain the dampness throughout the painting process. The wet floor acts as a magnet, trapping airborne dust particles and preventing them from settling on your freshly painted surfaces. If a wet floor environment is not feasible, an effective alternative used by professional contractors is to utilize inexpensive “kiddie pools” filled with a half inch of water, placed in the work area a day or two prior to painting.
To enhance the air-cleansing effect of the wet floor or kiddie pool, using a fan to circulate air over the water is recommended. This air circulation effectively captures and removes airborne dust. However, it is crucial to turn off the fan and any heat or air conditioning systems immediately before commencing paint application and keep them off for at least two hours after painting completion. This prevents air movement that could disturb the paint film before it sets. (Note: Exhaust fans required when working with solvent-borne coatings should remain operational.)
Application Guidelines for HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98
Tools: For optimal application, use a first-quality, clean, natural bristle brush. We recommend Omega Small Flats (S57’s) or Omega Round Sash (S203’s) brushes for this finish. Never use a roller to apply HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 to prominent areas, as it may result in a slight stipple effect, detracting from the smooth, mirror-like finish.
Spray Application: Fine Paints of Europe recognizes spray application as a viable method for applying our coatings. However, we do not provide consultation on spray specifications or equipment.
Application on Unpainted Surfaces and Waterborne Finishes: Following surface preparation, apply one coat of the appropriate FPE Primer/Undercoat. Use FPE or ECO Primer for wood, Primer AC for ferrous metal, and Key Primer for non-ferrous metals and plastics. Once the primer coat is dry, sand it lightly with 220 grit sandpaper and ensure it is clean (tacked) before applying two thin, even coats of HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98. Allow each coat to dry overnight before applying the next. For enhanced durability, consider applying two primer coats or a third finish coat.
Application on Surfaces Previously Painted with Oil-Based Paint: Surfaces previously painted with sound oil-based finishes that require minimal preparation can be painted directly with HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 without priming. Lightly sand the surface, thoroughly clean it to remove dust and debris, and then apply HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98. For previously painted surfaces requiring extensive sanding or scraping, clean the surface and then prime with FPE Oil Primer/Undercoat before applying two thin coats of HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98.
Always stir HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 thoroughly before use. Apply in thin, even coats. Under normal environmental conditions, thinning is not required. Clean brushes and equipment with FPE Mineral Spirits.
Avoid applying HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 in exterior applications when temperatures are below 40˚F or above 90˚F, or if rain is anticipated. Ensure the work area is well-ventilated during application.
Important Note on Sanding Between Coats: Sanding between coats of HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 is not necessary for adhesion. However, for high-profile areas that are subject to close scrutiny, we recommend light sanding with fine-grade sandpaper (220 grit or higher) between coats to achieve an even more refined appearance. After sanding, thoroughly vacuum or wipe down the surface with a clean rag or tack cloth to remove any sanding dust. Allow adequate drying time between coats and before sanding. To maximize the durability of the finish on floors, allow the final coat to cure for at least one week before exposing it to heavy traffic. Remember, sanding is for aesthetic refinement and not required for paint adhesion.
Achieving a Spectacular, Mirror-Like Finish: For an exceptionally smooth, mirror-like finish on walls and woodwork, use FPE Brushing Putty or Swedish Putty to prepare the surface before applying HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98. These specialized products create a luxurious, durable, glass-like base, further enhancing the brilliance of the HOLLANDLAC finish.
Maintenance and Care: HOLLANDLAC Brilliant 98 is designed for easy cleaning. Wash surfaces with a mild, powdered detergent and warm water. For more stubborn marks, gentle scrubbing may be necessary. Rinse thoroughly and dry (buff) completely to prevent water spots and maintain the pristine finish.
