Texas Tech University is making headlines again, and Red Raider Nation is buzzing with excitement! The question on everyone’s mind: Where Is Texas Tech going next? The answer is Memphis, Tennessee! Texas Tech has officially accepted an invitation to its 42nd bowl game in school history, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown against the Arkansas Razorbacks in the 66th AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
Mark your calendars for December 27th! Kickoff from the historic Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT, and you can catch all the action live on ESPN.
“Texas Tech is incredibly proud to accept our 42nd bowl invitation and make our return to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl,” stated Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt. “We are eager to bring the passionate Red Raider Nation back to the vibrant city of Memphis to showcase our football program on the national stage of one of college football’s most prestigious bowl games.”
This trip to Memphis marks a significant return to the site of one of Texas Tech’s most celebrated bowl victories. In 2021, the Red Raiders delivered a dominant 34-7 performance against Mississippi State in their inaugural AutoZone Liberty Bowl appearance. That victory ignited Texas Tech’s current three-game bowl winning streak, a feat that ties the longest such streak in school history.
The upcoming matchup in Memphis carries extra significance as it reunites two former Southwest Conference rivals. This will be the 38th meeting all-time between Texas Tech and Arkansas, but their first-ever clash in a bowl game. Fans with long memories will recall their last encounters during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, which saw Arkansas win in Lubbock, followed by Texas Tech’s triumphant 35-24 victory in Fayetteville the following year.
“Our entire program is thrilled to be heading to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl,” exclaimed head coach Joey McGuire. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our team to potentially achieve a nine-win season and conclude on a high note against a respected Arkansas program. We are counting on seeing a massive turnout from Red Raider Nation to transform Memphis into a sea of scarlet and black, painting Beale Street and the Liberty Bowl in our colors!”
Celebrating its 66th year, the AutoZone Liberty Bowl stands as the seventh-oldest bowl game in college football. It traditionally features a compelling matchup between a Big 12 team and a Southeastern Conference opponent. The Big 12 Conference officially became a bowl partner with the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in 2014, solidifying its place in this storied bowl tradition.
Red Raider fans are strongly encouraged to secure their AutoZone Liberty Bowl tickets directly through the Texas Tech Ticket Office.
