Where To Go After Defeating Messmer in Shadow of the Erdtree

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree plunges players into a vast, newly unveiled realm ripe for exploration from the moment you arrive. Initially, your priority should be bolstering your strength by gathering Scadutree Fragments scattered throughout the Shadow Realm, essential for tackling the formidable challenges ahead.

Messmer the Impaler, the DLC’s prominent figure, looms large in promotional materials. His imposing presence at the Shadow Keep’s summit might suggest him as the culmination of your journey. However, defeating Messmer is not the end. There’s still significant ground to cover before you confront the true final adversary of the DLC.

Continuing Your Journey After Messmer

Upon vanquishing Messmer, you acquire the necessary item to ignite the Sealing Tree, propelling you further along Shadow Of The Erdtree‘s main storyline. To reach this pivotal location, revisit the Specimen Storehouse’s first level. This time, diverge left and descend via the elevator to access the Shadow Keep’s lower depths. From there, you’ll encounter the expansive bridge leading towards the Rauh Ruins.

Venture to the westernmost reaches of this region to confront Romina, Saint Of The Bud. Triumphing over Romina allows you to burn the Sealing Tree, unlocking the DLC’s final dungeon. While this direct path is available, numerous optional zones and bosses await exploration, offering opportunities to gather more Scadutree Fragments and valuable rewards.

Exploring Optional Areas and Bosses

Shadow Of The Erdtree harbors several significant hidden bosses that seasoned players might want to challenge before tackling the final Legacy Dungeon. The Abyssal Woods, accessible from Messmer’s location, is home to Midra, Lord Of The Frenzied Flame. To reach the Abyssal Woods, navigate to this guide. Bayle The Dread, another formidable foe, can be found by venturing to the Jagged Peak in the southeastern part of the map.

By progressing to the Shadow Keep’s back gate, you’ll encounter Commander Gaius and gain entry to the Finger Ruins of Dheo. Furthermore, exploring the Finger Ruins of Rhia in the map’s southern area and activating the bells at both ruins will unveil the Finger Ruins of Miyr and the DLC’s most elusive enemy, Metyr, Mother Of Fingers.

En route to the Shadow Keep’s back gate, you can also discover the path leading to the Scadutree Avatar. Defeating this Avatar rewards you with the Great Rune Of Miquella, a highly beneficial asset for the DLC’s final confrontation. While these optional bosses are not mandatory for completing the DLC, engaging them is strongly advised to enhance your strength and preparedness for the trials ahead.
