Where is The Pit in Diablo 4? A Guide to Location, Unlocking, and Rewards

The endless pursuit of better loot is a core element of Diablo 4, and with Season 4, a beloved endgame activity has returned for fans of previous titles: The Pit. Officially known as The Pit of Artificers, this feature is designed to put player builds to the ultimate test, throwing them into procedurally generated dungeons swarming with enemies, culminating in a final boss encounter.

The Pit is a treasure trove of loot and essential crafting materials, making it the ideal destination for players seeking to acquire some of Diablo 4’s most coveted and rarest items. If you’re ready to dive into challenging, randomized hellscapes, The Pit awaits.

How to Unlock The Pit of Artificers in Diablo 4

Accessing The Pit involves venturing through a portal located in Cerrigar. This portal is activated via a peculiar obelisk situated within the town. However, before you can interact with this obelisk, your character must first reach level 60.

Previous iterations of the game required players to achieve World Tier 4 and conquer a Tier 46 Nightmare Dungeon to unlock The Pit. However, the Vessel of Hatred expansion brought significant changes to Diablo 4’s difficulty system. Now, The Pit becomes accessible on any World Tier once you complete a brief Priority Quest after hitting level 60. Following this quest, entry to The Pit is granted through Runeshards, which are dropped from various endgame activities including Helltides and Nightmare Dungeons.

The Pit shares notable similarities with Greater Rifts from Diablo 3. The primary objective is to eliminate hordes of monsters to summon a final boss. A timer initiates upon entering The Pit, and failure to defeat the boss before the timer expires results in a failed run. Death within The Pit incurs time penalties; the first death adds 30 seconds to the clock, the second adds 60 seconds, and the third adds 90 seconds, further reducing the time available to complete the run.

The Rich Rewards Within The Pit

Successfully navigating and completing a run in The Pit showers players with valuable loot, including a plethora of crafting materials and the chance to obtain coveted Unique items. These rewards are granted even if the run is not completed within the time limit.

However, completing The Pit within the time limit unlocks the crucial ability to level up your Paragon Board Glyphs, enhancing character power and build effectiveness. While The Pit was initially the primary source for Masterworking materials, this has shifted to Nightmare Dungeons since the Vessel of Hatred update.

Diablo 4’s Masterworking system, introduced in Season 4 as part of a comprehensive loot and gear overhaul, allows players to further refine their items’ affixes. This system provides a pathway for continuous character progression even after acquiring ideal “god roll” items.

Timely completion of a Pit run also unlocks the next tier of difficulty, presenting increased challenges and greater potential rewards. Faster clear times can unlock multiple tiers at once, accelerating progression. Currently, The Pit features 150 tiers, designed to challenge even the most optimized character builds and dedicated players.
