Kansas City is where cherished holiday traditions come to life, and one of the most magical is undoubtedly the Fairy Princess. The Kansas City Museum is delighted to announce the return of this beloved event to its elegant Betty Milbank Waldrop Salon, a stunning Louis XVI French Salon nestled on the museum’s first floor. This year marks a special milestone as the museum proudly celebrates its 38th year of hosting the Fairy Princess, a tradition rekindled in 1987 after Kline’s Department Store concluded its original run in the early 1970s.
A Beloved Kansas City Tradition: The Fairy Princess’s History
The story of the Fairy Princess in Kansas City began in 1935 at Kline’s Department Store, a prominent name on Main Street in downtown Kansas City. Kline’s ingeniously launched the Fairy Princess event to draw attention to their new “Toyland” Department, creating a whimsical experience for children during the holiday season. For 35 years, youngsters eagerly shared their holiday wishes with the enchanting Fairy Princess, making it a memorable part of Kansas City’s festive landscape. Though her reign at Kline’s concluded in the early 1970s, the magic of the Fairy Princess was destined to return.
